On January 8, 1989 The Greater Good Shepherd Church of God in Christ was started by Pastor Robert and First Lady Faye Smith in their home in the city of San Francisco, California. They soon moved to a storefront building located at 1633 Ocean Avenue in San Francisco, California and we worshipped the Lord there for approximately 10 years! We petitioned God for a larger sanctuary, a choir stand, dining area, classrooms for the youth, a Pastor’s study, and a parking lot. Through much prayer, fasting, and shut-ins the Lord led the late Brother Anthony Gray to a building that needed many repairs, located at our present location 5263 Foothill Blvd in Oakland, California. He shared his findings with Pastor Smith, but due to its condition he didn’t feel the Pastor would be impressed. It was confirmation because the Lord had also led Pastor Smith to the same building that same week!

 

In 1999 the building was purchased and renovated. We rolled up our sleeves and worked hard. The men and women of the GGS helped knock down walls, pulled up old carpets and tiles, whacked weeds over 6ft. tall, hauled away old furniture and made numerous trips to the dump. We were able to purchase new pews, new carpet and First Lady Faye Smith added her unique touch! With the continuous perseverance of Pastor Smith and the GGS members, we met our goal and paid off the church's mortgage on January 12th, 2004! On October 20th 2019, Pastor Smith was called to glory. Many souls were saved through his ministry and his legacy continues to live on!

 

On November 30th 2019, Pastor William P. Knight was appointed Pastor of the Greater Good Shepherd after having pastored Rice Temple Church of God in Christ for 10 years. He and his wife, First Lady Denise Knight are continuing the work of Pastor Smith and his wife, and he is implementing the vision that God has given him by remodeling the building, adding new amenities, and utilizing social media, evangelism & missions to help get the Gospel of Jesus Christ out to our community and beyond, so that more souls might be added to the church and to the Kingdom of God! Nothing can stop GGS, Jesus said, upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it!

Our Belief Concerning the Bible

 

We believe the Bible to be the inspired and only infallible Word of God.

 

Our Belief Concerning God

 

We believe that there is only one God, eternally existent in three persons: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit.

 

Our Belief Concerning the Church

 

We believe in the blessed Hope, which is the rapture of the Church, which is in Christ at His return.

 

Our Belief Concerning Sin

 

We believe that the only means of being cleansed from sin is through repentance, faith in the precious Blood of Jesus Christ and accepting the gospel according to Romans 10:9-10.

 

Our Belief Concerning Salvation

 

We believe that regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for personal salvation.

 

Our Belief Concerning Christ

 

We believe that the redemptive work of Christ on the cross provides healing for the human body in answer to believing prayer.

 

Our Belief Concerning the Holy Spirit

 

We believe that the Baptism in the Holy Spirit, according to Acts 2:4, is given to believers who ask for it.

 

Our Belief Concerning Sanctification

 

We believe in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a Holy and separated life in the present world. Amen
